SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly (JKLA) Speaker Advocate Abdul Rahim Rather on Friday stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive legal framework to address the growing challenge of fake news and misinformation in the Union Territory.

Speaking during a short-duration discussion on measures to curb misinformation, the Speaker said the issue has serious implications for public trust and social harmony, and requires a carefully balanced legislative response.
He emphasised that any proposed law should be framed after an in-depth study of existing legal frameworks and best practices adopted in other states and jurisdictions, ensuring both effectiveness and safeguards for democratic values.
Rather said the legislation should establish a robust mechanism to counter misinformation while promoting responsible communication and protecting the integrity of public discourse.
