SRINAGAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underscored India’s recent sporting achievements with special emphasis on Jammu and Kashmir, stating that the Union Territory is fast emerging as a centre of sporting talent.
Speaking during the 132nd episode of Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister described India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup as a moment of national pride, while highlighting Jammu and Kashmir’s maiden Ranji Trophy triumph as a historic breakthrough.
Referring to the final held in Karnataka, he said the JK cricket team created history by securing its first-ever Ranji title after nearly seven decades. He also commended young pacer Aaqib Nabi for his exceptional performance, noting that his 60-wicket haul during the season earned widespread recognition.
The Prime Minister said the landmark victory has sparked enthusiasm not only among players and support staff but also across the Union Territory.
Highlighting the region’s evolving sports culture, he noted growing participation of youth in multiple disciplines. He said the Khelo India Winter Games have already positioned Gulmarg as a prominent winter sports destination, while sports like football are gaining increasing popularity among youngsters, signalling a positive shift towards fitness and competitive sports.
