SRINAGAR: Traffic Police Rural Jammu has registered an FIR against the driver of a Tata Magic passenger vehicle after it was found carrying 17 passengers against its permitted seating capacity of eight during checking on Dhar Road in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The action was taken by the Station Officer, Traffic Billawar, during routine checking near Kandharnoo in Tehsil Ramkot. The vehicle, bearing registration number JK08J-7968, was intercepted while travelling from Rajwalta to Gujroo Nagrota.
According to officials, the vehicle was being driven by Mohit Kumar, son of Mohinder Kumar, a resident of Rajwalta, Tehsil Ramkot. During inspection, traffic officials found nine passengers in excess of the authorised seating capacity, raising serious concerns over passenger safety and the risk of accidents.
Officials said the vehicle had previously been challaned three times for overloading, according to its vehicle history.
Following the latest violation, FIR No. 180/2026 under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered against the driver at Police Station Billawar in Kathua district.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic Rural Jammu), Farooq Qaiser, said the matter would be taken up with the concerned authorities for cancellation of the vehicle’s Registration Certificate and the driver’s Driving Licence.
Qaiser also urged vehicle owners and drivers to strictly comply with the Motor Vehicles Act and Rules, warning that stringent action would continue against those violating passenger safety and traffic regulations.
