SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has received a Central share of Rs 250 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, of which Rs 163.73 crore has been utilised, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informed the Lok Sabha.
Replying to an unstarred question, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu said the Centre has reviewed the implementation of AMRUT 2.0, under which 8,777 projects worth Rs 1.97 lakh crore have been approved across the country to improve urban water supply, sewerage, septage management, water body rejuvenation and green spaces.
The ministry said that, as of July 9, 2026, 7,687 projects with a capital cost of Rs 1.37 lakh crore had been awarded, while works worth Rs 66,472 crore had been physically completed.
According to the reply, the Centre released or sanctioned Rs 17,834.22 crore under AMRUT 2.0 to States and Union Territories between 2023-24 and 2026-27 (up to July 9, 2026), with Rs 14,497.69 crore already utilised. Jammu and Kashmir accounted for Rs 250 crore in Central assistance, with expenditure of Rs 163.73 crore.
The ministry said AMRUT 2.0 aims to make cities self-reliant and water secure by ensuring universal sewerage and septage management coverage in 500 AMRUT cities. The approved projects include 3,572 water supply schemes, 605 sewerage and septage management projects, 2,951 water body rejuvenation works, and 1,649 park development projects.
Nationally, the mission has so far enabled the provision of around 70.62 lakh household tap water connections and 13.22 lakh household sewer connections in urban areas.
The government said the approved water supply projects are expected to create 11,769.08 MLD of water treatment capacity, lay 1.61 lakh kilometres of water distribution network and provide around 181 lakh new household tap connections. Sewerage projects will add 7,098.27 MLD of sewage treatment capacity, develop 40,021.24 kilometres of sewer network and provide around 69.41 lakh new sewer connections.
The ministry said implementation is monitored through State High Powered Steering Committees, an Apex Committee, regular reviews, site visits and an online AMRUT portal. Independent Review and Monitoring Agencies have also been engaged to assess project execution and recommend corrective measures to the States and Union Territories. AMRUT 2.0 further promotes recycling and reuse of treated wastewater through city water balance plans as part of sustainable urban water management.
