The restoration will cover the historic stepwell and its associated architectural elements while retaining the site’s original character and historical significance, officials said.

The project is also intended to strengthen the tourism appeal of Lah Wali Bowli and promote Rajouri’s historical heritage, with the site expected to be developed as a heritage attraction for visitors.

The approval forms part of the Government’s wider programme for conserving and revitalising historically and culturally significant sites across Jammu and Kashmir under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Several other heritage conservation projects have also been approved in recent months across both regions of the Union Territory.

These include the repair and renovation of Rattan Garh Fort in Bhaderwah, Doda; restoration and renovation of Ziyarat Sharief Khiram; repair and renovation of the historic Shiv Mandir at Thajiwara in Bijbehara; and restoration and revival of the historic heritage site of Purmandal in Samba.

The programme also covers conservation and upgradation of Imambara Zadibal in Srinagar, development of the holy spring of Khoo Sahib at Yarwan in Pulwama, restoration of the historic Jamia Masjid Sharief in Shopian and restoration of Sarvadhar Chaumanda Mata Mandir in Ramban.

The Government has said its heritage conservation efforts are aimed at protecting Jammu and Kashmir’s architectural legacy and cultural diversity while linking heritage sites with broader tourism and cultural development.

The restoration of Lah Wali Bowli is expected to improve the site’s appeal as a heritage destination and contribute to local tourism while preserving its historical significance for future generations.
