SRINAGAR: The Ujh River in Kathua crossed the danger mark on Tuesday after heavy rainfall in the district, prompting authorities to maintain close watch over the situation amid the risk of flooding.
According to the latest update shared by Kashmir Weather, the river recorded a discharge of 95,099 cusecs at noon at the Kathua gauge, reaching the reported danger level of 95,099 cusecs. The alert level at the location is 52,341 cusecs, while the evacuation level has been set at 1,44,701 cusecs.
The river’s discharge increased nearly nine-fold within two hours, the weather agency said.
Heavy rain was reported across Kathua from the morning, with rainfall intensity easing in the lower plains but remaining high in the upper reaches.
At 11 am, the Ujh River at Panjtirthi was flowing at 8 feet, below its alert level of 16.5 feet. The Tarnah River was recorded at 3 feet against an alert level of 4.3 feet.
The weather update warned that water levels in some rivers could cross flood declaration and danger marks in the following hours as rainfall was expected to continue.
All monitored locations were below their respective alert levels at 11 am, before the Ujh at Kathua subsequently reached and crossed its danger mark.
Authorities are continuing to monitor river levels and remain alert to the possibility of rising water levels and flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
