SRINAGAR: The Jammu Kashmir Government has sanctioned the “Chief Minister’s Scheme for Introduction of Heritage Courses” under the Skill Development Department, in a bid to preserve the Union Territory’s rich cultural heritage and create livelihood opportunities through traditional crafts.
According to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s office, in a post on X, the scheme will revive seven traditional craft courses across 25 training units in various Government ITIs and Polytechnics, with a total intake capacity of 500 students.

The initiative seeks to safeguard Jammu Kashmir’s centuries-old art forms while enabling the youth to transform these heritage skills into sustainable sources of income.
Under the scheme, trainees will be provided monthly stipends, and instructors will receive honorariums, promoting active participation and high-quality training.
The move would strengthen Jammu Kashmir’s legacy in crafts such as wood carving, papier-mâché, shawl weaving, and other heritage-based skills, by integrating traditional expertise with modern training infrastructure.
