SRINAGAR: An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan early on Thursday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported.
According to the NCS, the tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre located at latitude 34.55°N and longitude 70.62°E. Experts cautioned that shallow earthquakes are typically more destructive, as their seismic waves reach the surface faster, causing stronger ground shaking and higher potential for damage.

The latest tremor follows a devastating earthquake that hit northern Afghanistan earlier this week, claiming at least 27 lives and injuring nearly 1,000 people, according to reports from Tolo News.
Officials said that hundreds of homes were destroyed in the earlier quake, leaving many families displaced. Survivors, including women and children, have been forced to take shelter in school buildings as temperatures drop with the onset of winter.
In Khulm district, displaced residents have appealed for immediate humanitarian assistance, citing shortages of food, shelter, and medical supplies. “We need food and a proper place to stay. Winter is near, and my youngest child fell ill last night,” said survivor Nasim Gul, according to Tolo News.
Relief efforts are underway as authorities assess the damage and work to provide aid to those affected.
