SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has admitted a Private Member’s Resolution moved by Budgam MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi concerning Hokersar Wetland, allowing the matter to proceed towards consideration in the House.
The Speaker admitted the resolution under Rule 179. It is scheduled to be taken up after balloting, which is due to be held on September 18, 2026 at 3 pm in the office chambers of the Secretary of the Legislative Assembly.
The resolution calls for an examination of the present and historical extent of Hokersar Wetland and its adjoining residential and agricultural areas, with the stated aim of clarifying boundaries and protecting the rights of affected landowners.
It also seeks a review of the operation of flood gates and the management of water levels in and around the wetland, particularly in relation to recurring inundation of residential areas and farmland.
Another demand is for an assessment of the impact of water-level management on homes, agricultural crops and the daily lives of people living around the wetland. The resolution further seeks an evaluation of the condition and carrying capacity of the seven nallahs connected with Hokersar, citing their significance for drainage and flooding.
The resolution also calls for recognition of losses suffered by residents and agriculturists and seeks appropriate compensation for damage to property and livelihoods.
Mehdi has previously raised concerns over the demarcation of Hokersar and said the interests of residents in adjoining villages should not be compromised in the name of wetland conservation.
The resolution seeks a balance between conservation of Hokersar and protection of the legitimate rights and interests of people living in its vicinity.
