SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, ministers and legislators on Tuesday participated in a cleanliness pledge and signature campaign at the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Complex in Srinagar as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign.
The campaign, organised at the Assembly complex, sought to underline cleanliness as a shared responsibility and encourage public participation in sanitation and waste-management initiatives.
Abdullah, along with members of his Council of Ministers, legislators and other dignitaries, joined the signature initiative and took part in the cleanliness pledge.
The nationwide SHS 2026 campaign is being observed from September 17 to October 2 under the theme, “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag; Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat”.
The campaign focuses on public participation, cleanliness of identified target areas and public places, youth engagement, welfare of sanitation workers, waste segregation at source and waste-to-wealth initiatives.
The participation of legislators is also aimed at taking the cleanliness message to their respective constituencies and encouraging people to participate in local cleanliness drives, responsible waste disposal and source segregation.
The Directorate of Rural Sanitation is coordinating the campaign across Jammu and Kashmir. The UT-level campaign was launched at Block Khonmoh in Srinagar on September 17.
At the launch, Director General Rural Sanitation Anoo Malhotra called for making cleanliness a sustained habit rather than limiting it to a time-bound campaign.
The campaign will continue across Jammu and Kashmir till October 2, with activities focusing on cleanliness, citizen participation, youth engagement, sanitation-worker welfare and improved waste management.
