SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir has reported 43,878 cases of monsoon-related diseases till June this year, with acute diarrhoeal diseases accounting for the overwhelming majority, according to data tabled in the Rajya Sabha by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Tuesday.
The data shows that the Union Territory recorded 43,627 cases of acute diarrhoeal diseases, along with 57 dengue cases, 28 malaria cases, 160 chikungunya cases and six confirmed leptospirosis cases during the first six months of 2026. Four deaths due to acute diarrhoeal diseases were also reported, while no deaths were recorded from dengue or malaria.
According to the figures, dengue cases in J&K increased from 13 in 2025 to 57 till June this year, while malaria cases declined to 28 from 127 during the same period last year. Chikungunya cases rose to 160, compared to 113 in 2025, whereas leptospirosis cases dropped from 23 to six.
The ministry’s reply also shows that no case of Japanese Encephalitis has been reported from Jammu and Kashmir till June this year.
Replying to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said public health is primarily the responsibility of states and Union Territories, but the Centre provides financial and technical assistance under the National Health Mission for the prevention and control of monsoon-related diseases.
The ministry said the Centre has strengthened disease surveillance through a nationwide network of sentinel hospitals and referral laboratories, supplied diagnostics and medicines, and issued advisories to states and Union Territories to maintain adequate stocks of drugs, diagnostic kits and insecticides, intensify vector control measures and ensure early detection and containment of outbreaks during the monsoon season.
