SRINAGAR: A man was killed allegedly following a quarrel during a birthday celebration near Lower Roop Nagar in Jammu on Thursday night, with police arresting two brothers in connection with the case within hours.
The deceased was identified as Pawan Nair, also known as Sameer. Police said he was brought to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu by his friends in an injured condition at around 9 pm on September 17, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
According to police, the incident occurred while Neeraj, alias Anshu, was celebrating his birthday by the roadside near Lower Roop Nagar. His friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh, Sugandh Bhatti and Pawan Nair were present, while Neeraj’s brother Rishu was also accompanying him.
During the cake-cutting, Pawan allegedly put cake on Neeraj’s face, following which the two became involved in a verbal altercation. Police said John, Gaurav and Sugandh attempted to intervene and calm the situation.
Neeraj allegedly became enraged and attacked Pawan with a khokhri he was carrying, causing a serious neck injury. Pawan was subsequently taken to GMC Jammu by his friends, where he was declared brought dead.
After receiving information from Police Post GMC Jammu, a team from Police Station Janipur reached the hospital and initiated an enquiry.
Police subsequently registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Police Station Janipur and began investigation.
Neeraj and Rishu have been apprehended and are in police custody at Police Station Janipur. Police said efforts were under way to recover the alleged weapon used in the attack.
The body has been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination, while further investigation is in progress.
Jammu Police said strict and time-bound action would be taken in accordance with law.
