SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested five suspected drug peddlers in Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag and recovered substances believed to be cannabis, charas and heroin, police said on Monday.
In Shopian, police recovered about 13.264 kilograms of a ganja-like substance and four grams of a charas-like substance from a man during naka checking at Matipora Bridge. The accused was identified as Feroz Ahmad Wani, son of Gh Rasool Wani, a resident of Batamuran.
Police said a team from Police Post Berthipora intercepted Wani while he was carrying a nylon bag and travelling from Matipora towards Batamuran. A case under relevant provisions of law has been registered at Police Station Keller through FIR No. 101/2026, and an investigation is underway to establish the source of the suspected contraband and its forward and backward linkages.
In Kulgam, police intercepted a Tavera vehicle bearing registration number JK01T-4963 during naka checking at Shampora Crossing on the Qazigund NH and recovered 10 grams of a heroin-like substance from a bag kept in the dashboard drawer.
The driver, identified as Asif Shafi Bhat, son of Mohammad Shafi Bhat of Gund Chadoora, Budgam, was arrested. Police Station Qazigund has registered FIR No. 233/2026 under Sections 8 and 21 of the NDPS Act.
In a separate operation at Khandipairi, police apprehended Ali, son of Abdul Manan, a resident of JJ Colony, Delhi, presently residing at Pazalpora, Bijbehara. Six grams of a heroin-like substance was recovered from his possession, police said.
A case under FIR No. 67/2026 under Sections 8 and 21 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Qaimoh.
In Anantnag, police from Police Station Janglatmandi apprehended Aamir Yousuf Khan alias Vicky Gadar, son of Mohammad Yousuf Khan, a resident of Hazratbal. Police said 7.68 grams of a charas-like substance, in the shape of a ball, was recovered during his personal search.
In another case, a team from Police Post GBS apprehended Tariq Ahmad Khanday, son of Abdul Rehman Khanday, of Aung, during naka checking at Aung Bridge. Police said 10 grams of a charas-like substance was recovered from him.
Police said cognisance has been taken in both Anantnag cases and investigations have been initiated.
J&K Police said it would continue action against those involved in drug trafficking as part of efforts to prevent the spread of drug abuse among young people.
