SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified their efforts to combat the drug menace, with multiple arrests and significant recoveries of narcotic and psychotropic substances across different districts on December 20.
In Srinagar, police apprehended two drug peddlers in separate operations. Acting on a tip-off, officers from Nowgam Police Station, accompanied by a First-Class Executive Magistrate, raided the residence of Bashir Ahmed Ganie in Suthsu Kalan. The raid resulted in the recovery of 8.5 kilograms of psychotropic substances, and a case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused.
In a related case in Maisuma, police established a special checkpoint at Sheikh Bagh Lane following disclosures by two previously arrested individuals. The operation led to the apprehension of Shabir Ahmad Zaindari of Bemina, along with a substantial quantity of contraband substances. Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
Meanwhile, in Pulwama, two drug peddlers were arrested following leads in an existing case. One of the accused, Mudasir Ahmed Thoker, was found in possession of 264.5 grams of heroin. An earlier arrest in the same case had already yielded 305 grams of heroin and the seizure of a vehicle.
In another noteworthy development, the District Drug Disposal Committee in Sopore destroyed narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances worth over Rs 1 crore in compliance with a special court order. The seized drugs, including poppy derivatives, codeine phosphate bottles, and SpasmoProxyvon capsules, were incinerated at an approved facility in Lassipora, Pulwama.
