SRINAGAR: A senior police officer from Jammu and Kashmir has been selected for the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service as part of the Independence Day 2026 honours.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shoket Hussain Shah is the sole recipient from Jammu and Kashmir listed under the Police Service category in the official list of recipients. His name figures at serial number 44 among the awardees announced for Independence Day 2026.
The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service recognises distinguished and meritorious service by personnel in the police and other uniformed services.
The 2026 list includes police personnel from several states and Union Territories, besides officers and personnel serving in central forces and other security organisations.
Among the state police forces, the list includes senior officers as well as personnel from different ranks. Jammu and Kashmir’s representation comes through SSP Shoket Hussain Shah, whose selection places him among the police personnel recognised for distinguished service this Independence Day.
The honours also include personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Security Guard (NSG), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), National Investigation Agency (NIA), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Special Protection Group (SPG) and other services.
The award list was issued as part of the Independence Day 2026 honours, with personnel being recognised across different police, security, fire and correctional services.
The recognition for the Jammu and Kashmir officer comes alongside awards to police personnel from states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Odisha and others.
The official list places the Jammu and Kashmir awardee between recipients from Puducherry and the Assam Rifles, reflecting the representation of the Union Territory among this year’s distinguished service awardees.
