SRINAGAR: One person was killed and another critically injured after a Village Defence Committee (VDC) member allegedly opened fire at them in the Moungri area of Udhampur district on Friday, officials said.
Quoting a senior police officer, the news agency KNO reported that the incident took place in the morning when the two men were travelling towards Damnot Police Post.
According to the officer, an argument broke out between the persons during the journey, following which one of them allegedly opened fire.
One person was killed in the firing, while another sustained serious injuries and was subsequently taken for medical treatment.
The deceased was identified as Baldev Singh, son of Karta Singh, while the injured person was identified as Romesh Singh, son of Nak Ram.
“All the persons involved in the incident are members of the VDC,” the officer said.
Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the firing. Further details are awaited.
