SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday issued a public advisory urging victims of cyber blackmail, particularly those being threatened with the publication of private photographs or videos, to report such incidents immediately instead of remaining silent.
In the advisory, police warned that cyber criminals frequently exploit private content, emotional manipulation and the fear of social exposure to intimidate victims and pressure them into silence.
“Fear is exactly what scammers rely on,” the advisory said, urging people not to panic or give in to threats.
Police said online blackmail and extortion are criminal offences under the Information Technology Act and appealed to the public to report such crimes without delay.
Victims of cyber fraud, online blackmail or harassment have been advised to lodge complaints by calling the National Cyber Helpline on 1930 or through the government portal cybercrime.gov.in.
The police assured the public that all complaints would be handled with sensitivity and that prompt legal action would be taken against those involved in cyber extortion and harassment.
