SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police have cautioned people against cybercriminals who pose as friends on digital platforms to gain their trust and subsequently defraud them, urging users to verify identities before sharing personal information or transferring money.
In a public awareness message, the police warned that fraudsters may initiate conversations by pretending to reconnect with people before offering attractive opportunities and eventually demanding payments.
The advisory urged people to remain cautious while accepting friend requests from unknown individuals and refrain from sharing personal or financial details with unverified contacts.
People have also been advised not to transfer money or make payments in response to requests received from such contacts without independently verifying their authenticity.
Emphasising the need for vigilance, the police urged users to think carefully and verify information before acting on online requests.
Anyone suspecting a cyber scam can call the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or lodge a complaint through the official portal, cybercrime.gov.in.
The police stressed the importance of staying alert, verifying online identities and taking precautions to avoid falling victim to cyber fraud.
