SRINAGAR: Jammu Kashmir Police has warned people against a fake payment scam in which fraudsters use fabricated hospital emergency stories and forged payment messages to persuade victims to return money allegedly transferred by mistake.
In an online safety advisory, the police cautioned that scammers may claim that their child is in hospital and seek urgent financial assistance to gain the trust of unsuspecting people.
The fraudsters may then share fake SMS alerts or payment screenshots showing an amount credited to a bank account. They subsequently claim to have transferred excess money by mistake and ask the recipient to return the difference.
The police warned people against falling for such tactics and advised them to verify any claimed payment through their bank accounts before transferring money to anyone.
People who fall victim to cyber fraud have been urged to immediately call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or register a complaint through the official portal, [cybercrime.gov.in](https://cybercrime.gov.in?
