SRINAGAR: The Cyber Cell of District Police Kupwara has successfully resolved several cases of online financial fraud, recovering a total of Rs 1,55,208 for victims duped through various digital scams.
In a notable July 2024 case, a complainant lost Rs 84,380 to an online earning scam. The Cyber Cell acted swiftly, gathering evidence and employing advanced cyber techniques to recover the entire amount, which was credited back to the victim’s account.
In December 2024, another victim fell prey to a fraudulent call impersonating Jio Customer Care, resulting in a loss of Rs 1,01,196. The Cyber Cell recovered Rs 65,418 from a merchant where the fraudster had ordered an Apple iPhone 15, and this amount was returned to the victim.
Other cases included a job scam where a victim was duped Rs 5,430 through fake interviews and credential theft. The Cyber Cell recovered Rs 4,560. In another instance, Rs 850 was fraudulently obtained via a fake Instagram advertisement, which was fully recovered and returned.
Jammu and Kashmir Police has urged the public to remain cautious about online scams involving fake trading, suspicious links, fraudulent loan apps, SIM update calls, and fake social media advertisements. The police emphasised the importance of not sharing personal details online and reporting any suspicious activities promptly to the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or via the portal www.cybercrime.gov.in.
