SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir reported 664 non-conforming food samples during 2025-26, with the Union Territory initiating 1,368 civil cases and securing 14 convictions under food safety laws, according to the Centre’s latest data placed before the Lok Sabha.
The figures were shared by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in a written reply to Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1093 on “Adulteration in Food Items”, answered on July 24, 2026. The question was raised by MP Rajabhau Parag Prakash Waje.
According to the provisional data for 2025-26, Jammu and Kashmir analysed 6,546 food samples, of which 664 were found to be non-conforming. Authorities launched 1,368 civil cases and recorded 14 convictions during the period.
Ladakh analysed 519 food samples, detecting 26 non-conforming samples. The Union Territory initiated 12 civil cases but reported no convictions during the year.
At the national level, State and Union Territory Food Safety Authorities analysed 2,23,808 food samples during 2025-26. Of these, 40,023 samples were found to be non-conforming, while 31,878 civil cases were initiated and 1,918 convictions were secured. The Ministry stated that the 2025-26 figures are provisional and remain subject to revision based on further laboratory testing and court proceedings.
The parliamentary reply also provided data for the previous two years. In 2024-25, Jammu and Kashmir analysed 6,955 samples and found 651 to be non-conforming, initiating 1,239 civil cases and recording 29 convictions. Ladakh analysed 417 samples, detected 45 non-conforming samples, initiated 38 civil cases and reported no convictions.
In 2023-24, Jammu and Kashmir analysed 9,057 food samples, with 750 found to be non-conforming. The Union Territory initiated 1,612 civil cases and secured 22 convictions. Ladakh analysed 638 samples, detected 11 non-conforming samples, initiated 19 civil cases and recorded no convictions.
The Ministry furnished the State and Union Territory-wise enforcement data as part of its reply on action taken against non-conforming food products, including cases involving food adulteration, under the Food Safety and Standards framework.
