SRINAGAR: As many as 393 tribal villages across 112 blocks and 20 districts of Jammu and Kashmir have been covered under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan (PM-JUGA), with mother sanctions worth Rs 59.23 crore generated for the Union Territory during 2025-26 and 2026-27, according to data tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
The figures were disclosed by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in response to an unstarred question on the progress of the PM-JUGA, also known as the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DAJGUA).
The data show that no funds were released directly to Jammu and Kashmir under the scheme during 2024-25 or 2025-26. However, mother sanctions of Rs 39.21 crore were generated through the PFMS-SNA Sparsh system during 2025-26, followed by another Rs 20.02 crore during 2026-27.
JK accounts for 393 of the 63,843 tribal villages covered under the nationwide programme. The UT has 20 districts and 112 blocks included in the scheme, while neighbouring Ladakh has 143 villages across 30 blocks and two districts.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2024, the PM-JUGA aims to address infrastructure gaps and improve access to health, education, Anganwadi services and livelihood opportunities in tribal areas. The five-year initiative covers 63,843 villages in 549 districts and 2,911 blocks across 30 States and Union Territories, with more than five crore tribal people targeted to benefit.
The Centre said the programme comprises 25 interventions implemented by 17 ministries. Progress recorded nationwide includes sanctioning of 13,02,811 houses under PMAY-G, completion of 8,21,566 houses, sanctioning of 5,008 km of roads under PMGSY and operationalisation of 436 mobile medical units.
Under the initiative, 875 new Anganwadi centres have been sanctioned nationally, of which 681 have been operationalised. A total of 692 hostels have also been sanctioned under Samagra Shiksha, although only four had been completed as of July 1, 2026.
The programme has also resulted in the sanctioning of 5,252 villages under the Universal Service Obligation Fund, with 3,777 villages covered so far. Under the Ujjwala scheme, 23,16,049 LPG connections have been sanctioned against a target of 25 lakh, while 1,32,090 connections have been distributed.
The Ministry said the scheme is intended to saturate critical infrastructure and services in tribal-majority villages while creating livelihood opportunities and strengthening access to government welfare programmes.
It said state-wise progress and funding are monitored through the relevant ministries and implementation mechanisms, with allocations and sanctions based on requirements and approved interventions.
