Governor NN Vohra Tuesday expressed grief on the tragic death of 15 persons in a road accident which occurred today at Udhampur district while state government said that Rs 14 Lakh relief was given to Next of Kin (NoK) of the dead.

Vohra has conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for eternal peace to the departed souls and speedy recovery to those injured in the accident, an official statement said this late evening.

The Governor has been seriously concerned about the fatal accidents which having been occurring with sustained frequency on certain road stretches in the State.

A Raj Bhavan Spokesperson informed that the Governor had recently addressed the Chief Minister about 40, 957 road accidents having taken place during 1/1/09 to 31/7/15, leading to 58,072 persons being injured and 6953 being killed. On an average, thus 18 accidents take place in the State in which 25 persons are injured and more than 3 killed every day.

In this context, the Governor has urged the Chief Minister to chair a special meeting of the Cabinet to determine and issue the required directives.

Meanwhile, the official statement said that fourteen persons were killed and 17 injured in a tragic road mishap occurred at Dalsar near Ramnagar when a mini bus on its way from Ghordi to Ramnagar plunged into a gorge.

The driver of the ill-fated bus with number JK 14-C 8068 lost control over the vehicle during an attempt to overtake leading to loss of lives. Nearly, seven persons, out of 17 injured, are reported to be critical.

The district administration provided relief of Rs 1 Lakh each to next kin of the dead and Rs 10,000 each to the injured.

Immediately after incident the district administration swung into action and launched rescue operation evacuating 14 persons from the vehicle. Besides, eight ambulances, rescue teams and cranes were rushed to the spot. A group of around 50 local youth helped in rescue operation.

Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, DIG Udhampur-Reasi Surinder Kumar Gupta along with SSP Suleiman Choudhary, CMO Dr Chander Parkash, ARTO Rajesh Gupta and DySP Traffic rushed to the spot.

The dead include  Ajay Kumar S/O Nek Ram R/O Surni,  Khem Raj S/O Tej Ram R/O Nallaha Gorrian,  Sapana Devi D/O Sudesh Kumar R/O Plassian, Surjoo Devi W/O Tulsi Das R/O Dalsar,  Bindoo Ram S/O Chinku R/O Jandhore, Neshi W/O Shakti R/O Kanah,  Ragbir Singh S/O Shaju Singh R/O Jandhore, Ashok Kumar S/O Chait Ram R/O Ghordi, Ganesh Dutt S/O Amar Dutt R/O Nallaha Mallian,  Sushma Devi D/O Attar Chand R/O Jandhore, Shailo Devi W/O Kartar Chand R/O Kanah,  Santi Devi W/O Prem Singh R/O Massal,  Mulkh Raj R/o Nallaha Gorrian and Subash Kumar S/O Bittu Ram R/O Kanah, Ramnagar.

The injured include   Polli Devi W/O Vijay Kumar R/O Nallaha Mallian, Geeta Devi   W/O Ganesh R/o Nallaha Mallian, Bal Krishan  S/O Mast Ram R/O Sunetar Nikhal S/O Subash Chand R/O Ghordi, Yash Paul   S/O Lofi Ram, R/O Nallaha Mallian Pooja Devi D/O Khem Raj R/O Kannah,  Raksha Devi W/O Pritam Singh R/O Jandhore, Dharmu Devi W/O Suram Chand R/O Birnoo, Roshan Kumar S/o Thakur Das R/O Kannah, Sudesh, Kumar S/O Charan Das R/O Ghordi Khas, Pinky Devi W/O Govind Ram  Singh R/O Nallaha Mallian, Monika D/O Dina Nath R/o Chowki, Mulkh Raj S/O Punu Ram R/O Ghordi, Chait  Ram S/o Badri Nath R/O Dalsar, Dharam Chand S/O Suram Chand R/O Birnoo, Shubham S/O Sanjay Kumar R/O Ghordi and Jeet Kumar S/O Mulakh Raj R/O Jagir Ghordi.

DC Udhampur provided relief cheques to Tehsildar Ramnagar which were later handed over to the aggrieved families.

Meanwhile an FIR has also been lodged at Ramnagar police station for investigation into the matter.
