SRINAGAR: The water level in the River Jhelum continued to rise steadily on Thursday following heavy rainfall across Kashmir, prompting flood control authorities to maintain a close watch even as the river remained below the danger level at all three major gauge stations.
According to the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the highest level was recorded at Sangam, where the river reached 19.5 feet at around 5 pm, against the danger level of 25 feet.
At Ram Munshibagh in Srinagar, the river level climbed to 17 feet at around 5 pm, remaining below the danger mark of 21 feet.
Further downstream at Asham, the water level touched 10 feet at around 5 pm, well below the danger level of 16.5 feet.
The department’s hydrograph showed the sharpest rise at Sangam from late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, with the river continuing its upward trend through the day. Water levels at Ram Munshibagh and Asham also recorded a sustained increase, though at a comparatively gradual pace.
Officials attributed the rise to continuous rainfall and runoff from upper catchment areas. While no flood alert has been issued for the Jhelum, authorities said the situation is being monitored round the clock and advised residents in low-lying areas and along riverbanks to remain vigilant in view of the ongoing wet spell.
