Army Tournament

Sheikh-Ul-Alam (RA) knockout tournament, a collaborative initiative jointly being organised by Chinar Corps and J&K Editor’s Association, was kick started on 22 May 2015 has culminated Sunday at Astro Turf Football Ground at Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), Srinagar with JK Bank Team emerging as the winner of the tournament.

“The nail biting finals was played between JK Bank and JK Forest teams. The finals were graced by the Chinar Corps Commander, Lt General Subrata Saha alongwith various prestigious Civil and Army dignitaries,” a defence spokesperson said this evening.

This was the first tournament, under the banner of Sheikh-Ul-Alam (RA) knockout football tournament and a mega sports initiative undertaken as collaborative effort of Army spearheaded by J&K Editor’s Association, the spokesperson informed.

“20 Football teams from across Kashmir had participated in the tournament. The matches were played on knockout basis from 22 May 2015 to 07 June 2015 between the teams at the TRC ground and the tournament was culminated with final match played on 7th Jun 2015. Hundreds of locals had taken keen interest in the proceedings and had flocked to the ground to witness the matches,” the spokesperson added.

The spokesperson added, “this was the finest opportunities for the Football players to showcase their talent as the selected players would be provided couching by the professional couches of international repute.”

“The event was an initiative of J&K Editor’s Association as the large number of people had been requesting Army for the mega football Tournament,” the spokesperson said adding, “accordingly, J&K Editor’s Association approached the Chinar Corps and proposed to take the lead in organising the tournament. While entire conduct was undertaken by J&K Editor’s Association, the logistic and financial support was provided by Chinar Corps through Sadhbhavana.”

“The players played with full zeal & enthusiasm and displayed their skills in a very professional manner particularly with the prospects about Army’s plan for establishment of Football Academy at Sainik School Manasbal,” the spokesperson maintained.

“In year 2014-15 Army organised a total of 71 sports tournament across Kashmir, however, this sports fixture was the first of its kind where participants availed the opportunity to prove their determination and make a career in the sports field.”
