JKLF leader Yasin Malik and many of his associates were intercepted by police near Awntipora and arrested, a party spokesman said. They were on way to Kanalwan in periphery of Bibejhara town to attend in a public rally, the party had organmized.

A party statement said the intervention of the police provoked locals who came out in large number to protest against it. Police, it said, used force to quell the protesters.

Apart from Malik, those arrested include Showkat Baskhshi, Abdul Rashid Sheikh, Mohammad Amin Mughloo and Shabir Ahmad Dabla.

Malik was quoted by his party spokesman saying the ruling party has imposed a literal ban on the political activity of the people.
