Members of Jammu Kashmir People’s Alliance (JKPA) and SMC councillors on Tuesday took out a huge rally to protest against the assault on Deputy Mayor and chairman JKPA, Sheikh Imran during a councillor session of SMC on Monday.

protestors set an effigy of SMC Mayor Junaid Azim Mattoo on fire at press colony on January 22, 2019.

Scores of members of JKPA assembled at Press Enclave Srinagar holding placards that read “Put the culprits behind the bars”, “Shame on Junaid Mattoo’s position”, “Junaid ko Hataw, Kashmir ko Bachao”, “Shame on proxy candidates of NC”, “Gundaraj band karo, band karo band karo”, sought an intervention of authorities in removing the SMC Mayor Junaid Azim Matto, and an action against those involved in the “pre-planned” attack.

The protestors alleged that the attack on Sheikh Imran was pre-planned under a conspiracy of BJP RSS backed corporators and both the commissioner and Mayor are a part of this conspiracy.

One of the councillors, Mohammad Lateef Mir said, “Yesterday’s incident was pre-planned and the seating arrangement was done in a suspicious manner so that in case of attack, there was no chance of escape.”

“He was attacked for speaking against BJP campaigns and illegal construction in the city. Earlier, he has been threatened by those people on twitter as well,” he added.

They said the corporation belongs to all of us and one person cannot claim to hold all powers. “We are in the corporation to work for the welfare of people and would continue to do that but some proxy candidates from NC and supporters of BJP and RSS who are responsible for dismantling Srinagar city are only here to find ways to loot money,” said another councillor.

Amid shouting anti-BJP slogans, an effigy of Srinagar Mayor Junaid Mattoo was set on fire by the furious protestors.
