The Minimal Access Surgical (MAS) unit established by Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir (DHSK) at JLNM Hospital, Srinagar has performed over 1300 Minimal Access Laparoscopic Surgeries in addition to the routine Laparoscopic surgeries since May 2016.

The spokesman said laparoscopic procedures have been a routine in JLNM hospital along with various other peripheral District Hospitals in past, however, the Directorate came up with a dedicated MAS unit at JLNM Hospital in the year 2016

The surgeries including gallbladder, appendix, ventral and inguinal hernias, varicoceles, orchidopexy, orchidectomy, hydatid cyst, ovarian cyst, ectopic pregnancy and diagnostic laparoscopic procedures for chronic abdominal pain, infertility and staging for malignancies are done by minimal access.

The MAS unit headed by Dr H Vaqar Ahmed and assisted by Dr Akhter Ganai is supported by a team of dedicated staff members.

In addition to this, the unit has been imparting training to the doctors and operation theatre staff of various hospitals of the valley and organize academic based surgical workshops on a routine which is being attended by specialists including faculty from tertiary care hospitals also.

Director Health Services, Kashmir, Dr Saleem ur Rehman has complimented the MAS unit team and Medical Superintendent, JLNM Hospital Dr Nazir Shahdad for achieving this milestone and has assured them of full support in upgrading the unit for better patient care.
