JNU Dismisses Professor After Sexual Harassment Inquiry

   

SRINAGAR: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has dismissed Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following an inquiry by its Internal Committee into allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by at least 10 students.

The university issued the dismissal order on Friday, October 9, stating that the action was taken after considering the committee’s findings and following the prescribed procedure.

Akoijam was a faculty member at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU’s School of Social Sciences.

According to the order, the Internal Committee investigated the allegations and recommended major disciplinary action under the applicable service rules.

“Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee (IC), the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam,” the order stated.

The university’s decision follows the committee’s inquiry into the allegations. The order did not provide further details of the committee’s findings.
