SRINAGAR: Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader and Kulgam MLA MY Tarigami on Monday called for changes to the CID verification mechanism in Jammu and Kashmir, arguing that people should not be denied security clearance on account of alleged militancy-related activities involving their relatives.
In a post on X, Tarigami referred to several High Court rulings which, he said, had made it clear that an individual’s security clearance could not be withheld merely because of the alleged involvement of family members in militancy-related cases.
He said, however, that applicants continued to encounter obstacles in securing CID clearance over the alleged involvement of even distant relatives in such activities.
Pointing to the long-term consequences of the practice, Tarigami said families continued to face difficulties even when the relatives concerned had died years earlier, with younger generations bearing the consequences despite having no connection with the alleged activities.
He called for the verification process to be reassessed so that clearance decisions were based on an individual’s own conduct rather than allegations against relatives.
Tarigami said security considerations were important but should not undermine the rights of innocent individuals or restrict their future prospects.
