SRINAGAR: Vehicular movement on the Kargil–Leh National Highway (NH-1) remained suspended on Thursday after a massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall blocked the strategic road near Akchamal in Kargil district.
Officials said a large quantity of mud, rocks and debris came down onto the highway, completely disrupting traffic between Kargil and Leh.
Road clearance work has been launched, with men and machinery deployed to remove the debris and restore connectivity. Traffic will remain suspended until the road is cleared and declared safe for movement, officials said.
Authorities have advised commuters and transport operators to avoid travelling on the Kargil–Leh highway until further orders and to check the latest traffic advisories before undertaking any journey.
The disruption is expected to affect the movement of passengers and essential supplies between Kargil and Leh until the highway is reopened.
