However, officials from the Agriculture Department said the situation remains under control, with no major crop damage reported so far.

“We have spoken to all officers and experts. There are no alarming reports as of now. But if the heatwave persists, we are prepared,” a senior official from the department said.

The official said a contingency plan is in place to respond to any adverse impact and that the department is in consultation with SKUAST-Kashmir. Advisories have been requested to help farmers manage the situation.

“Some isolated dry patches have been observed. Field officers have been directed to use lift irrigation wherever possible. These instructions are already active in affected areas,” the official said.

He added that full submergence of paddy fields is not essential at this stage and that hairline cracks are a natural sign of irrigation need.

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted rain in the coming days, which could bring relief. “If it rains, the situation will recover. If not, we have a response mechanism ready,” the official added.

Meanwhile, a senior official from the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department said isolated cases of water stress have been reported, and field staff have been directed to take necessary remedial measures.

The Meteorological Department has forecast hot and humid weather with brief rain or thundershowers at scattered places on June 23 and 24.

From June 25 to 27, generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate rain or thundershowers is expected at many places, with heavy rain likely at isolated locations in the Jammu division. Similar intermittent showers are forecast for June 28–30 and again on July 1 and 2. (KNO)
