Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have imposed restrictions in several parts of Downtown Srinagar on Monday as the Kashmir valley is observing a shutdown on the call of resistance leadership led by octogenarian Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani to express solidarity with local prisoners detained in various jails.

“Restrictions under section 144 CrPc have been imposed in Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, MR Gunj and Safa Kadal. While partial restrictions have also been imposed in Maisuma and Kralkhud,” officials of Srinagar district administration said.

The authorities have also placed Hurriyat Conference (m) chairperson Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest at his Nigeen residence while senior resistance leader Syed Ali Geelani continues to remain under house arrest in his uptown Hyderpora residence in the city for last seven years.

Heavy deployments of police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been made in areas placed under restrictions in the city and other district headquarters of the valley.
