Two militants were on Monday killed in a gunfight with forces in Handwara area of northern part of Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Superintendent of police (SP) Kupwara Ghulam Jeelani said two militants were killed in the firefight.

The militants were identified as Ashiq Ahmad Bhat of Palhallan Pattan and Toib Majeed Mir of Brath Kalan Sopore. Hundreds of people have gathered in Brath Kalan to receive Mir’s body.

Reports said that protests erupted in Palhalan as the news of death of Bhat reached there.

Meanwhile, Internet services were suspended in Kupwara and Baramulla districts following the killing of two militants.

Police in the evening issued a statement into the killings of militants.

“Two militants, who attacked a joint party of  Police, Army and CRPF, were killed in exchange of fire in north Kashmir’s Handwara area on Monday evening.

The militants fired upon a joint party of Police Handwara, 21 RR and 92 Bn CRPF who were performing Naka duties near Sultanpora Crossing, Zachaldara in the jurisdiction of police station Handwara. The attack was repulsed and both the militants were killed by the timely retaliation of the alert Security personnel. The slain militants were identified as Toib of Sopore and Ashiq of Palhallan Pattan and were affiliated with HM outfit.”
