A complete shutdown was observed in Kashmir on Wednesday against the killing of three civilians by the government forces in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district and in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, even as restrictions remained imposed at several places to thwart protests.

To maintain law and order the authorities places strict restriction in parts of Srinagar city including at the Old City. The call of shutdown was given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL). All the pro-freedom leaders were either placed under house arrest or lodged in different police stations. The Mobile internet was also snapped in many part of the valley including in north and south areas of Kashmir.

Life in Kashmir was crippled on Wednesday as shop and business establishments were closed and traffic was off the roads in valley due to a day-long strike called by JRL against the killing of civilians in alleged security force firing.

The government in a bid to maintain law and order imposed curfew-like restrictions in parts of summer capital Srinagar areas falling under the jurisdiction of five police stations of M R Gunj, Safa Kadal, Nowhatta, Khanyar and Rainawari besides some areas in Kralkhud and Maisuma since this morning.

All the pro-freedom leaders including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Faroq, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Javaid Ahmad Mir, Syed Salim Geelani, Zaffer Akbar Bhat, Hakim Abdul Rashid and others were placed either house confinement or detained in different police stations.

Meanwhile, Police Wednesday disallowed MLA Langate Sheikh Abdul Rashid from visiting Shopian where he had planned a protest march against the killing of Rubiya Jan at the hands of security forces.

Pertinently, three civilians Misra Begum of unisoo area of Handwara, who was killed during gunfight in area, Asif Iqbal a young sumo driver of Thandipora area of kupwara was killed by army near his home and Rubia Jan of Shopian was killed in forces firing during encounter at Batmurran area in Shopian district.
