Srinagar

Temperature across the Kashmir valley witnessed a sharp dip, with the Summer Capital witnessing its coldest night of the season. Bone chilling cold, frozen water bodies and icicles gave Kashmir a taste of real Chillai Kalan Friday morning.

The night temperatures also resulted in freezing of residual water on paths and lanes, making it difficult for the residents to move around freely.

An official of the Meterological department informed that Srinagar recorded a low temperature of minus 5.8 degrees, thus making the last night the coldest night of this winter.

He said the minimum night temperature in the south Kashmir town of Qazigund in Islamabad district was minus 8.0 degrees Celsius as against earlier night’s minus 7.0 degrees Celsius.

The night temperature in Kokernag settled at minus 10.2 degrees Celsius, down by 2.7 degrees as compared to yesterday.

In north Kashmir’s Kupwara town, where the previous night’s minimum was minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, the temperature settled at a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius during the night. The minimum night temperature in Pahalgam hill resort in south Kashmir was slightly up at minus 12.4 degrees Celsius from the previous night’s minus 13.0 degrees Celsius.
