The upcoming Pakistani movie ‘Azaadi’ is based on the subject of Kashmir, with the starring cast of the film including Nadeem Baig, Moammar Rana and Sonya Hussain.

The film highlights the struggle of a man who sacrifices himself for the freedom of Kashmir and how his vision is carried forward by young people.

It will be the first movie directed by Imran Malik, the son of longtime filmmaker Pervez Malik.

Imran, speaking to media, said, “the film has elements of patriotism, a very powerful love story, some action scenes; a film has never been attempted on such a big canvas in Pakistan before.”

Actress Sonya Hussain, who portrays the role of the female protagonist, revealed that the film also conveys a strong message of women’s empowerment, apart from the Kashmir struggle.

“My character Zara is an independent journalist, who is Pakistani but was born and brought up in the UK. She’s outspoken, feisty and just an empowered woman that many young girls will be able to relate to,” she said.

‘Azaadi’ is being shot by Australian cinematographer Ben Jasper, who also shot the Bollywood hit Bang Bang, with the soundtracks featuring music by Sahir Ali Bagga and tracks by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Quratulain Baloch and Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan.

The film is slated for release this year, with the trailer aptly being released on Kashmir Day.
