University of Kashmir has directed all the student-boarders to vacate the hostels soon. However, the university administration has decided to allow only those students to stay in the two boys’ hostels who are writing their exams in coming days.

Speaking to Kashmir Life, Provost Boys’ hostels, Prof G N Khaki said, “students had made a representation to allow them to continue their stay in the hostels and we had a meeting in this regard with VC today.”

The University of Kashmir had issued a circular asking the boarders to vacate of MAK and MA hostels, forthwith. However, student-boarders had resented the move sighting on-going semester examinations.

“Our VC has been generous enough as students who have their semester exams this month or in February have been allowed to stay in the hostels,” Prof Khaki said.

He said that there is “no reason why the students should continue stay in the hostels when academic session has already ended”. “The academic session shall resume in March and hostels shall start functioning again, normally,” he said.

Prof Khaki claimed that many of the boarders have not yet cleared their dues. “Many of the boarders have outstanding dues of Rs20k, Rs 14k etc,” he said, “they should clear those dues as well.”

When asked about the complaints of the boarders about the low standard mess and other facilities in the hostels, Prof Khaki replied, “mess is being run by students themselves and it is up to them what they want to eat. More so, we are maintaining best quality boarding facilities for them.” “Come and enjoy the sumptuous lunch and the facilities in any of the varsity hostels!”
