SRINAGAR: National Conference MLA Mubarak Gul on Tuesday called for Kashmiri to be made a mandatory subject in schools, while Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said the language could not be officially recorded in the House because translators were not available.
Raising the issue during the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly proceedings, Gul sought steps to ensure that students are taught Kashmiri in schools across the Union Territory.
Responding to the language-related issue in the Assembly, Rather said the absence of translators was preventing proceedings conducted in Kashmiri from being officially recorded.
The exchange brought the use and institutional recognition of Kashmiri into focus during Tuesday’s proceedings of the House.
