A final-year engineering student from Kashmir was attacked by at least seven students with “knives and iron rods” at his rented accommodation in Chandigarh on Friday afternoon.

Mubashir Bashir Mattoo of Shalina Lasjan, who is pursuing B.Tech Computer Science at Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Jhanghri told GNS that a group of seven students of the college attacked him at around 4:30 pm when he was in his rented accommodation at TDI City Landra in Mohali.

“They barged inside the flat and attacked me with iron rods and knives,” he said, adding, “Kashmiri students are not safe outside JK. Even the locals here see us with suspicion.”

Mubashir said he had earlier intervened and prevented a Kashmiri student from getting beaten up by the same group of students in the college.

His colleagues said they provided to police the list of all the students who attacked him. “Had police taken the action in the previous incident against the same group who attacked Mubashir, they would not have repeated this act of hooliganism,” they said.

Station House Officer (SHO), Sohana, Inspector Tarlochan Singh told Global News Service (GNS) over the phone that police has taken cognizance of the incident and “raids are being conducted to arrest the attackers.”

“A case FIR number 267/2018 under section 451, 323, 506,148,149 IPC has been registered against the persons involved in the attack,” the SHO said.

“A police team has been sent to the areas and raids are being conducted to arrest the culprits,” he said and assured strict action against those involved in the incident.

The officer said that as per the statement given to police by Mubasir and his colleagues, one among the attackers is from Jammu and another from Himachal Pradesh.

The rest are locals, the SHO said. (GNS)
