At a time when Kashmiri walnut growers express fear to lose a major chunk of their market to American walnut, the J&K Horticulture department has decided to issue ‘organic certificate’ to Kashmiri walnuts.
The department has observed that the walnut is mainly grown without any chemical treatment in valley.
For three years, the media report said, walnut growers will have to self-certify the produce. “This will be followed by third party intervention, in which the crop and the nature of its cultivation will be inspected.”
The move is likely boost the demand for Kashmiri walnut in global market, which otherwise is “battling for survival”.
