SRINAGAR: Kathua district recorded the highest rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir during the past 24 hours, receiving 153.4 mm of rain as an active monsoon spell continued to batter the Union Territory, triggering flash floods, landslides and waterlogging in several districts, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a fresh warning of heavy to torrential rainfall.
According to rainfall data compiled by Kashmir Weather, Samba received 133 mm of rainfall, followed by Udhampur with 132.6 mm. Jammu Airport recorded 67.7 mm, while Jammu city received 62.1 mm. Other major rainfall totals in the Jammu division included Katra (58.5 mm), Poonch (51 mm), Ramban (49 mm), Batote (46.1 mm), Reasi (44.5 mm), Rajouri (40.8 mm), Bhaderwah (36.8 mm), Banihal (25.3 mm), Doda (24 mm) and Kishtwar (23 mm).
In the Kashmir Valley, Gulmarg recorded the highest rainfall at 55 mm, followed by Baramulla (37.5 mm) and Tangmarg (28.2 mm). Other stations reporting significant rainfall included Pahalgam (23.8 mm), Lolab (22.4 mm), Nowgam Handwara (21.2 mm), Awantipora (21 mm), Qazigund (19.6 mm), Kokernag (17 mm), Pulwama (13.4 mm), Shopian (11 mm), Kulgam and Sopore (10.2 mm each), Sonamarg and Asham (10 mm each), Srinagar and Sangam (8.5 mm each), Ganderbal and Pampore (7 mm each) and Srinagar Airport (5.9 mm). In Ladakh, Leh received 5.2 mm of rainfall.
The widespread precipitation has severely affected several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, causing flash floods, overflowing rivers and streams, landslides, damage to infrastructure and disruption to normal life.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a fresh weather warning, forecasting another spell of rain and thunderstorms across several districts of Jammu and Kashmir on July 22. The weather office said **heavy to torrential rainfall and brief intense showers are likely in parts of the Union Territory between 4:00 am and 3:30 pm.
Authorities have advised residents, particularly those living in low-lying and vulnerable areas, to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during the warning period due to the risk of adverse weather conditions.
