SRINAGAR: Dr Mohammad Shafi Bhat, elder brother of noted author, poet and former Director of Information and Public Relations, Khalid Bashir Ahmad, died at SKIMS, Srinagar, on Saturday morning after a brief illness. He was around 80.
Bhat, a physician by profession, had been battling cancer and died at around 9:45 am at SKIMS.
A resident of Bagh-e-Mehtab, Srinagar, and formerly of Sonawar Bagh, Bhat had spent nearly 35 years in Madina, Saudi Arabia, where he lived in the vicinity of Masjid Saba and also served there. He had largely remained away from professional medical practice in Kashmir.
He had received his medical education and training at PGIMER, Chandigarh, and was remembered by those who knew him as a soft-spoken, courteous and deeply polite person.
The Namaz-e-Janazah was offered at 3 pm today at Jama Masjid Nauman, Bagh-e-Mehtab. His body was thereafter be taken to the ancestral graveyard at Gupkar, Sonawar, for burial.
He is survived by his wife, Dr Mehmood-un-Nisa; son, Omar Shafi; daughters Dr Nayeema Shafi and Dr Humaira Shafi; and their spouses, Dr Arshad Wani and Dr Rashad Shafi. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr Mohammad Ismail Bhat and Khalid Bashir Ahmad.
Khalid Bashir Ahmad, a widely published author and poet, served as Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations, Jammu and Kashmir.
