The 10-kilometre long-distance run is scheduled to be held on May 17, commencing from Badamwari Gate. The route will pass through key heritage areas of Srinagar’s old city, including Kathidarwaza, Chattipadshahi, Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowpora, Khayam, Munawarabad, Baba Dawood Khaki Bridge, Baba Demb, Fateh Kadal, Khankah, New Zaina Kadal, Old Zaina Kadal, Budshah Tomb, Saraf Kadal, Bohri Kadal, Malaratta, Nowhatta, Jamia Masjid, and Gojwara, before culminating at Islamia College Campus, Hawal.
Initially, participation was capped at 100 professional long-distance runners. However, in view of the unprecedented response, organisers extended entries to 125 athletes. In addition, 10 mentors and 15 icons will be part of the event, bringing the total participation to 150. Registrations have now been officially closed to maintain the professional standard of the run.
All participants will be provided with customised finisher medals, T-shirts, and certificates.
The event is being supported by NITians Career Institute, Paristaan, Adlife, and Media Line, with Khyber serving as the title sponsor.
“Run for ShahreKhaas was a regular feature in Srinagar’s old city until 2015, and we are proud to revive it. Our aim is to highlight the rich heritage of the old city while promoting a healthy lifestyle,” an organiser said. “Given the response this year, we plan to make the next edition bigger, with more categories and wider participation.”
The event is being seen as a significant initiative to blend sports with cultural heritage, bringing renewed attention to Srinagar’s historic core.
