SRINAGAR: In the Mir Bazar attack that led to the killing of five persons including a cop and three civilians, police have issued the following statement saying the militant who was killed in the attack was wanted by NIA.

Police said the police post Mir Bazar had recived information regarding a vehicular accident near Alstop on National Highway and a team of led by In-charge PP SI Safdar Hussain rushed to the spot for the evacuation of injured person.

Militants, it said, took the advantage of traffic jam and fired upon the police party with the intention to kill them, resulting in injuries to two policemen and four civilians. The fire was returned by the police party in which one militant identified as Fayaz Ahmad Ishwar @Setha got killed.

Among the injured, policeman Mahmood Ahmad, three civilians Suhail Nabi Bhat resident of Badipora Tral, Niyaz Ahmad Mir resident of Malpora Kulgam and Hem Raj Sharma resident of Samba succumbed to their injuries. SPO Raqeeb Ahmad No 514/SPO son of Farooq Ahmad and Ghulam Hassan Dar of Krewan Malpora were shifted to Srinagar.

“The killed HM militant was active from last two years and was involved in many subversive activities. He remained active in his local area and motivated youth to join militant ranks. He used to provide logistic support for safe passage of militants and their associates,” the statement said.

The said militant was wanted in the case FIR No 08/2015 investigated by NIA for his role in a Fidayeen attack on a BSF Convoy on August 2015 at Narsu Udhampur. In this attack two BSF personnel were killed and 11 others were injured. They have recovered one pistol, 01 pistol magazine, 08 pistol rounds and a grenade from the spot of the clash.

Police has registered a case FIR number 100/2017 under section 307 RPC, 7/27 Arms Act and investigation has been taken up.

The civilians and the policeman killed in this incident have left behind aged parents, young siblings and children.
