SRINAGAR: A bag snatcher had done his job within minutes a resident withdrew his amount from the bank. Had not police jumped into quick action mode, Ghulam Qadir would have missed the bus for Haj.

Details gathered from social websites suggest that Ghulam Qadir of Banoon, Bounjwah village withdrew Rs 2,30,000 and packed it in his bag and left the branch. This amount was required for his Haj ticket and other expenses for the pilgrimage.

After withdrawal of the amount he was walking towards the road in a street adjacent to the Bank, reports said. Suddenly somebody appeared and quickly snatched the bag, apparently knowing that it is cash filled. The old man failed to catch hold of him but his wits worked quickly and he approached the police.

Police was sympathetic. They registered an FIR (96/2017 u/s 341/382 RPC dated 05.06.2017) and launched a quick manhunt. All the exits were sealed and nakas put in place. Finally, the bag snatcher was arrested.

The snatcher was identified as Tanvir Ahmed son of Abdul Jabbar Sheikh, a resident of Saranwah, Thakraie. The cash was restored to the old man. He will go on Haj and Sheikh will go to jail.
