In a public notice, KPDCL clarified that the messages are fake and have not been issued by the corporation. Consumers have been advised not to respond to such communications or act on the instructions contained in them.

One of the fraudulent messages, sent from an unsaved mobile number, claims that the recipient’s electricity connection would be disconnected at 9 pm because the previous month’s bill had not been updated. It asks the recipient to contact a person identified as “Mr Santosh Singh” on another mobile number.

KPDCL warned consumers against calling the numbers provided in such messages and advised them not to share one-time passwords (OTPs), personal or banking information, or make any payment based on the communication.

The corporation urged consumers to verify their electricity bill and payment status only through its official channels.

KPDCL has also asked consumers to remain alert to such attempts and share the warning with others to help prevent phishing and smishing-related fraud.
