SRINAGAR: Flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall have damaged agricultural land, crops, roads and other infrastructure in parts of Thanamandi in Rajouri district, with residents facing renewed disruption amid the ongoing wet spell.
The latest flooding has affected several hilly areas where sudden rises in water levels in local nallahs have impacted roads and agricultural fields.
The situation comes weeks after a cloudburst in the Rajdhani area of Thanamandi subdivision on July 19 triggered flash floods and landslides, leaving four people dead and causing extensive damage to houses, roads, vehicles, farmland and other infrastructure.
Among the roads affected during the earlier flooding was the Thanamandi-DKG-Bufliaz road, an important route connecting Rajouri and Poonch. Several stretches were washed away or damaged by floodwaters.
The repeated flooding has added to losses suffered by farming communities, with agricultural land and standing crops affected in several areas.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall has again raised water levels in parts of Rajouri. A flood-like situation was reported on Wednesday after the Dharhali and Saktoh rivers rose significantly following incessant rain. The district administration subsequently ordered the closure of government and private schools as a precautionary measure.
Authorities have continued to monitor the situation, particularly in low-lying areas affected by waterlogging and disruption.
The district administration has also been reviewing road connectivity and infrastructure requirements in Thanamandi and adjoining areas. Earlier this month, officials reviewed eight PMGSY road projects in Darhal and Thanamandi, of which six were under execution and two were awaiting forest clearance.
Residents in affected areas have sought an immediate assessment of the damage, restoration of disrupted roads and infrastructure, and compensation and assistance for farmers whose crops and agricultural land have been affected.
