A number of people, mostly youth and including a school going girl were injured in ding-dong battles between youth a police after protests broke out when the Friday congregations were over. The pitches battles were fought around the Jamia Masjid.

Protesting youth were chanting anti-government and pro-freedom slogans. Apparently, they were protesting against setting up of Sainik Colonies, a plan government earlier said was not around.

As the protesting youth marched towards main chowk of the town, police intervened. They used tear smoke shells to disperse the youth who resorted to brick-batting. Eye-witnesses said a school going girl, several cops and many civilians were injured during the clashes.

BMO Kupwara, Dr Fareed Ahmad told reporters that around 15 civilians received injuries and were treated in the hospital. No person had any seriously injury and most of them were sent home after first-aid.

In Sopore large number of people came out on streets after Friday prayers from Jamia Masjid of main market and held protest demonstration. The procession swelled up after people from other mosques of the town also joined them.

When the procession reached near CRPF bunker close to State Bank branch, there were clashes between protesters and CRPF. Police fired tear gas shells and pellet on the stone pelting protesters. Similar scenes were witnessed at Chota Bazar of the town.

The protests triggered shutdown in the town.

At Jamia Masjid in Srinagar’s old city, youth took out protests and pelted stones on police. The police resorted to teargas shelling to quell the stone pelting.
