National Conference Thursday demanded the State Government ascertains the whereabouts of three missing youth in Kupwara without any further delay.

NC Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani, while expressing concern at the “continued lack of any information on the whereabouts” of Ghulam Jeelani Khatana, Mir Hussain Khatana and Ali Muhammad Sheikh said the apprehension of an “enforced disappearance as voiced by the families of the missing youth was serious and worrisome”.

“These three youth had apparently left to work as porters with the Army three weeks ago and suddenly stopped communicating with their families – since when their whereabouts are unknown. The families repeatedly implored the State Government to act and help them in looking for their dear ones but to no avail. Now, after being dejected by the callousness and insensitivity of the State Government, the family has successfully moved the Honourable Court and this has resulted in the arrest of an individual from the Territorial Army for due investigation into this grave matter. We appreciate the action of the Honourable Court and express our solidarity with the families in these moments of uncertainty,” NC Provincial President said in a party statement.

“The State Government should finally wake up after the Court directions and investigate this matter without any reluctance or inhibitions. These incidents add to the sense of despondency and anxiety in the Valley and the insensitivity of the State Government in even acknowledging the seriousness of this issue is extremely tragic and condemnable,” he stated.

“This matter should be thoroughly probed and the truth must be made public. The responsibility for this lies with the Chief Minister and the State Government,” the NC Provincial President further added.

Meanwhile, NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, and its Working president, Omar Abdullah, expressed solidarity with journalist Riyaz Masroor over the demise of his father.
